Okay, so you know how some places feel like an international trip, but with a familiar twist? Hong Kong and Macau were kinda like that for me. But Taiwan? Taiwan was a whole different ballgame, in the best possible way. It reminded me a lot of when I first explored Singapore – distinct, vibrant, and utterly captivating.

I’d budgeted a pretty hefty chunk of change – we’re talking 50,000 New Taiwan Dollars – for my 4-5 day stint in Taipei. And let me tell you, I was ready for some big-city sticker shock, especially after hearing about accommodation prices (thankfully, that was pre-paid!). But you guys, I was floored by how affordable everything else was. Seriously, beyond the hotel, my wallet barely took a hit!

My local friends, bless their hearts, were a little wide-eyed when I told them how much cash I was toting around. “Be careful of pickpockets!” they warned. But c’mon, it’s 2024! And frankly, I had a ton of faith in the general honesty and integrity of the Taiwanese folks I’d met. And guess what? Not a single issue. My money stayed exactly where it belonged – in my pocket.

And perhaps the most heartwarming part? Despite any underlying political nuances, every single Taiwanese person I met was incredibly welcoming and warm. We connected on so many levels, sharing laughs and stories. My only piece of advice? Don’t go looking for trouble by bringing up super sensitive political topics. We’re guests in their country, here to experience their culture, not to be a soapbox or a propaganda machine. Keep it chill, be respectful, and you’ll have an amazing time.
