│Tainan’s Shanshang District: The Shanshang Water Purification Plant│
Tucked away in Tainan’s Shanshang District, you’ll find the incredible Shanshang Water Purification Plant. This sprawling site is divided into two main sections: the Water Purification Pond Area and the Water Source Area. Now, a heads-up: the Water Source Area is currently undergoing some restoration work, so if you’re keen to explore its interior, you’ll need to apply online for approval in advance.

Good news, though! The Water Purification Pond Area, located just across a small lane, is open to the public – no permits or applications needed! But here’s the fun part: to truly soak in the tranquil beauty of this “lost castle” vibe at the Shanshang Water Purification Plant, you’ll need to conquer a solid 200 steps. Trust me, the view (and the history!) at the top is absolutely worth the workout.

The Shanshang Water Purification Plant, originally known as the Tainan Waterway, played a pivotal role in public health. Back in the day, early Taiwan faced some pretty severe sanitation issues. Infectious diseases were rampant, environments were unsanitary, and there was a dire lack of proper drainage and clean drinking water. Luckily, during the Japanese colonial period, improving public health became a top-tier priority for the administration.

So, in 1912, during the Japanese occupation, this essential water supply system was established to meet Tainan’s drinking water needs. It brought the convenience of clean water to over 100,000 local Tainan residents and was a game-changer for the region’s economic development. Today, it stands as a significant cultural asset for Taiwan.

Fast forward a bit. By 1982, this Tainan Shanshang Water Purification Plant could no longer keep up with the city’s booming population and was officially decommissioned. It gracefully retired from active duty, stepping into the annals of history. What it left behind are these incredibly atmospheric, history-rich buildings, adding another magnificent century-old landmark to Tainan’s already vibrant tapestry of historical sites.
