So, National Taiwan University, or NTU as everyone calls it, first kicked things off in 1928. Back then, during the Japanese colonial period, it actually went by “Taihoku Imperial University.” Fast forward to 1945, after Taiwan’s restoration. It officially became “National Taiwan University.” When the Nationalist government set up shop in Taiwan in 1949, NTU really hit its stride. It became the island’s top-funded institution. This was especially true since National Central University wasn’t back on its feet there yet. President Fu Ssu-nien was running the show then.
NTU isn’t just Taiwan’s oldest university. It’s also the island’s most comprehensive public research powerhouse. It definitely lives up to its nickname, “Taiwan’s foremost institution.” Honestly, it’s a major player globally in academia too.
Walking onto the NTU campus totally reminded me of Xiamen University. Right from the main gate, a seriously long and stunning Palm Boulevard greets you.

Heads up! The “Fu Bell” is a huge landmark here at NTU. It symbolizes the university’s spirit. You’ll find it right in the heart of Palm Boulevard, on the right. It sits pretty next to the Administration Building.
Full disclosure: I got there after class. It was already getting pretty late. I just walked quickly down Palm Boulevard to the library. Then I called it a day! I made a beeline for Shida Night Market. I needed some tasty braised treats. So, I didn’t get to explore the NTU campus much myself. But my brother and sister? Oh, they got the full scoop! They hooked me up with killer shots!

Heads up! Walk the Palm Boulevard to the very end. Cross the lawn, and you’ll hit the Main Library. Not an NTU student? You’ll need to flash your passport. This gets you a temporary reading pass to enter.

Side note: NTU’s architecture totally rocks those classic Japanese vibes. Makes total sense, right? Its history explains it. And get this: my brother and sister must’ve hit graduation season right at the end! These pics don’t lie!

Digging through the photos, I totally discovered something else! My brother and sister also checked out: Aletheia University!

and Soochow University! Seriously, my sibs went on a much deeper dive than I did! Talk about campus connoisseurs!
