Hey adventurers! Let’s chat about a true gem in Taichung, Taiwan: the Gaomei Wetlands. This coastal tidal flat is a total showstopper, especially at sunset. Seriously, trust me on this one!
Get this: after the Gaomei Seawall went up, ocean currents got busy. They pushed silt for decades. Fast forward to now, and boom! You see a massive, flat tidal expanse. Pretty wild, right?
It’s not huge, but this wetland packs a punch. It’s a biodiversity powerhouse! Think tidal creeks, swamps, and sandy stretches. You’ll find gravel beds and muddy flats too. It’s a thriving, complex ecosystem. Pure nature’s VIP party!
This spot is a huge deal for birdwatching in Taiwan. If you’re in Taichung, it’s *the* place to go. Expect a jaw-dropping sunset experience!
You’d think I’d have seen Gaomei by now. I’ve been to Taiwan for work 33 times! Mostly Taipei, five Kaohsiung trips, and just three to Taichung. Two of those were in 2015. But nope! Transportation was always a nightmare. I couldn’t figure out the logistics. It stubbornly stayed on my ‘someday’ list.
Then came 2018. I had a three-week tour: Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. I’d already hit Taichung’s main spots. So, I declared, “Okay, Gaomei Wetlands, it’s GO time!” I barely recall the route. It involved an HSR from Hsinchu to Taichung. Then a leg to Qinyuan, plus *another* ride from there. I arrived right at sunset. Oh man, it was so windy! My luggage was with me, too. No way I could hit the boardwalk. Major bummer! I just had to turn back.
My Taichung classes lasted 3 days. It was a total washout, raining daily. I almost gave up on Gaomei. Then, a miracle! The sun peeked out after class one afternoon. I raced to my hotel, dropped my laptop. Then, I sprinted to the 309 bus stop. The entire ride, I crossed my fingers. I even bribed the travel gods. Please, don’t let the sun disappear! I needed that legendary sunset.
And boy, did it deliver! I walked the wooden boardwalk. Wide-open spaces stretched out. Tall grasses swayed in the breeze. It was pure magic, folks. Giant white windmills slowly spun far off. The water shimmered with each gust. And the sunset? Oh my gosh, it *exploded*! Fiery orange blazed across the sky. Couples shared quiet kisses. Moms giggled with their kids. It felt like a postcard. Honestly, it was straight out of a rom-com!

Side note: My local contact spilled a secret. Each massive windmill costs a cool hundred million bucks! Seriously, how much power do they need to break even? My mind was totally blown.
